Hi. I just heard your podcast today (which I downloaded because, as a Portuguese Catholic, I got interested in what you had to say about our referendum vote). Unfortunately, I need to tell you that according to our law our referendum was valid, though non-binding. Which means: there are three possible outcomes in Portugal for a "yes/no" referendum: "binding yes": the Parliament would HAVE TO approve the new law; "binding no": the Parliament would HAVE TO disapprove the new law; "non-binding", or in lay terms "you decide, because I won't": the Parliament can do whatever the majority of them decide. So, my people (in general, not the ones who did vote) simply washed their hands out of this matter. The new abortion law will be approved, I am very sorry. Please remember my country in your prayers, if you can.

Thank you for the clarification. We certainly got the story wrong. I'm sorry too that the law passed. All Portuguese Catholics should be commended because you withstood the pro-abortion groups longer than many other countries.

Just yesterday, South Dakota's state senate rejected a bill to ban most abortions in that state. The state's house of representatives had passed the bill. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I'll try to find out for the March podcast.

Thanks for listening. I'm grateful that you took the time to correct our total misunderstanding of the referrendum. I'll include your clarification in the March podcast.

    Mike
